McMaster
EcoCAR

Participating in North America’s Premier Collegiate Automotive Engineering Competition.
PARTNERED With the Best in the Industry

Overview

A team of engineering students at McMaster University, set to engineer the next-generation battery electric vehicle (BEV) with the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ via 4-year competition.

Hands-On Learning

McMaster EcoCAR gives students opportunities to explore, design, and integrate through involved, real-world projects, from a custom electric powertrain to a composite high voltage battery enclosure.

Sponsorship

The team is grateful to receive support from many competition and team sponsors, without whom goals could not have been achieved. Interested in sponsoring? We'd love to hear from you!

Industry Collaboration

The team works with industry leaders such as dSPACE, General Motors, and MathWorks. We've also collaborated with companies like Valeo, who helped with the design of our custom front end accessory drive.

FALL 2022 – SUMMER 2023

Year 1 deliverables are focused on setting goals and planning for the next leg of the competition. Sub-teams are focused on establishing familiarity and ensuring all software is in working order.

McMaster EcoCAR aims to place Top 5 in competition, promote inclusivity, have all members personally connect to one another, and submit all deliverables well in advance.

Subteams

Five teams working in harmony, for one goal.
The Electrical and Mechanical teams fall under the System Design and Integration (SDI) group, working on the design, integration, evaluation and refinement of the propulsion systems and components to ensure proper vehicle operation while maintaining safety.

They work closely with the Systems Safety team to develop test cases for fault detection, to prevent the vehicle from going into failure mode.
Meet the team
The Propulsion, Control and Modelling (PCM) subteam investigates propulsion architectures, vehicle control, and modelling of the BEV and subsystems.
The Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) team is focused on developing, integrating and refining CAD hardware and software for automated driving feature deployment. Their work involves sensor integration, autonomy stack architecture design, and perception algorithm review.
The Communications subteam is responsible for promotional events, recruitment, community engagement, outreach, and social media management.
The Equity in Mobility (EiM) subteam is focused on implementing inclusivity initiatives and apply accessibility considerations across all team activities.

Experience

An impact in career, in schooling, in community, that extends beyond the surface.
EcoCAR means the world to me. I am so glad to be a part of this organization. Having organizer/industry support and direction to further enhance sustainable transportation through implementation of propulsion systems and automated vehicle technologies while enhancing energy efficiency, maintaining consumer appeal, and addressing climate change which are all part of the world's transition to a greener, safer, more inclusive and more sustainable future.

For me, my favourite thing about EcoCAR is about applying what I learned in school to read-world applications that I am passionate about. My drive and interest in engineering a world that can be efficient, clean, and sustainable while exploring new designs and ideas in a judgment-free area means everything to me.

EcoCAR has been a great experience that I am very happy to be a part of. It has given me the ability to work with many industry professionals as well as develop real-world skills. Being involved in EcoCAR has also provided me with many relationships that I never would have obtained without joining and being involved. I have met life long friends and made relationships that make the team feel like one big family.
